Civil Service
The persons who work in central government i.e. Ministries and Departments form the Civil Service. These largely permanent jobs, cover both jobs that are unique to the particular Ministry (e.g. Agricultural Assistant is only in the Ministry of Agriculture), and jobs that are supporting and common in all Ministries (e.g. Clerks, Accountants, Administrative Officers, etc.) in departments such as Human Resources, Finance, General Administration, Audit, etc. Some Civil Service officers may also work in schools, police administration and the judiciary. There are an estimated 35,000 Civil Service permanent and temporary officers.
Civil Service workers are hired through the Public Service Commission.
Other civilians work in Ministries and Departments, on contract, and are hired by the respective Ministry or Department. Many IT, Communications, Facilities jobs are contract jobs, as well as, specialist technical jobs that generally do not require long-term service.

Local Government

Teaching Service
These professions are involved in educating the population and school administration spanning Early Childhood Care and Education Centres (ECCEs), Primary, Secondary and Special Technical schools. There are over 13,000 Teaching personnel in the public service and these persons are hired by the Teaching Service Commission.
Persons in the public tertiary sector are hired by their respective Universities/Tertiary Institutions.

Tertiary Education

Police Service
These non-civilians protect and serve the population. The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) is responsible for recruiting police service personnel.
The Police Service Commission is responsible for recruiting the Commissioner and Deputy Commissioners of Police. There are an estimated 6,500 police officers in T&T.
It is to be noted that Municipal Police are not part of the TTPS but are part of Local Government.

Defence Force
This military arm of the State comprises the Regiment, Coast Guard, Air Guard and Reserves. Some 5500 persons are employed to protect Trinidad and Tobago.

Fire Service

Prisons Service
Over 2500 Prison Officers of various ranks are responsible for the operations of prisons, correctional and rehabilitations centres and other holding facilities of offenders. The Public Service Commissions is responsible for hiring persons in the Prisons Service.
- Over 2,500 officers work within the Prisons Service, managing correctional facilities and rehabilitation centers.
- Officers are hired by the Public Service Commission to ensure the safety and rehabilitation of inmates.
Judicial and Legal Service
Judges, magistrates and other legal professions comprise this Service. There are just under 600 persons employed in the Judicial and Legal Service. The Judicial and Legal Service Commission is responsible for hiring.
- With under 600 professionals, this sector includes Judges, Magistrates, and other legal professionals who uphold the rule of law.

Public Health Workers
Some 20,000 persons are employed in public health through the Regional Health Authorities. They serve at hospitals, health centres and other health facilities. These jobs span the medical field and all other support areas for operating our public health including general administration.
